Jacob Abbott used several pseudonyms. He authored several articles in the 1924 Monitor using "Mertrem". It was one of several names that he adopted while a member of a secret literary society at Andover. Note that it is a palindrome. (Like one of his other names-Erodore.)

The Monitor Designed to Improve the Taste, the Understanding and the Heart Volume 2 in 1924 contained a couple of Abbott contributions. It is a monthly journal which commenced publication in january, 1823.

Hobgoblins was in the June, 1824 issue. It is signed as Mertrem. It is a four page short story. One of the earlier "horror" tales.

In May and June, 1824 Abbott wrote a short piece called Slavery using the pseudonym Mertrem.

Another pseudonym "Phala" which was used by Abbott is noted in this journal to be a contributor. In August, 1824 a four page article called "The Duty of Our Country" written by Phala was published.
